    About the Talk

Painting often shows itself as a static object, but to effectively analyze a painting is to treat the practice as essentially a process, with the canvas being its medium. Why did reflections on the painterly medium in mid-20th century lead to American painters embracing abstraction? Why did artists pivot to body-related themes and practices afterwards? What did this have to do with abject art? Will painting ever be outdated?

This Sunday, New York-based artist Sarah Faux and art history doctoral scholar Deng Tianyuan will come to Yuz Museum to explore the way the canvas is used as an analogy for bodily experience in the former’s paintings and how one’s subconscious and intimate memories surface during the painterly process.
